It was the pinnicale of rotary development........THE EUNOS COSMO

PRE-PRODUCTION

The JC Cosmo was born out of the 80's & Mazda's yearning to create a multi rotor production car for the masses. The 1st glimpse of the pseudo Cosmo can be seen in the 1985 Mazda MX-03 concept car. Powered by a 13G triple rotor engine it featured many design features to be seen in later production cars such as the FC RX-7, BG-323, GD-626, HD-929.

The MX-03 was shown to the world in 85/86 & received praise everywhere prompting Mazda to turn the concept into a reality. The Japanese economic bubble was still growing, rotary sales where excellent & Mazda just wanted to do a multi-rotor top dollar Marque killer.

MODELLING

Mazda made several clay models from design sketches before moving onto full sized models for senior staff to approve. Mazda fully intended the Cosmo to be an exported world car meaning there must be a lhd version & this was shown in a full sized model. they made multiple full sized models following standard policy consulting with Mazda USA & Eurpoe along the way.

1st GPS vehicle in the world

Although Pioneer was the 1st company to release aftermarket GPS receivers in 1989. It was a Mitsubishi-Electric system using the fledgling "GPS Japan" system fitted to the Cosmo that scored the "1st production car in the world" title.

Worth remembering is the fact that Japan did not have complete coverage in 1990 like we take for granted today. In fact, it wasn't until 1996 that there were sufficient satellites orbiting to provide accurate positional data for the everyday user. So early users of the system simply got accustomed to seeing their Cosmo (at times) projected 2km out to sea when travelling a coastal road.

6-years is a long time in the electronics world so as with anything electronic, it didn't take long for the Mitsubishi unit to become antiquated leaving the Cosmo well behind by mid-90's standards. So it stands today as a lonely icon to the ever growing GPS world. A world still too young to remember its roots.

1st Sequential twin-turbo "series production" vehicle in the world

It was the limited production run (300) of Porsche 959 supercars in the late 80's that inspired Mazda engineers to utilize a sequential turbo system for enhancing rotary engine torque & maintaining flow through the rev range. Porsche had invested Millions into developing a practical sequential turbo system & typically, the Japanese copied, added their own ideas & made it practical for series production vehicles.

The sequential operation of the turbo's allowed the engine to produce over 90% of its peak torque of 402NM from just 2000rpm. Something no Rotary engine has ever achieved before & since. Various ECU inputs would crunch the numbers before allowing a smaller 2nd turbocharger to assist around the 3500 - 4000 rpm area in keeping the power surging right through to redline. For flow effeciencies & conservative attitudes, the boost was limited to just 0.65-bar. A figure many Cosmo owners have since altered to suit themselves.

Driving the sequential turbo system on the street gave a vastly superior feel compared to previous single turbo applications (HB-Cosmo + HC-Luce + FC RX-7). Boost came on significantly quicker allowing each rotor to be pressurised sooner resulting in a far more throttle responsive set-up than a single or non-sequential system could provide.

All this came at a cost & by the time the Hitachi based system was bolted onto the side of each engine, it practically equalled the cost of a 2-rotor engine. Little wonder why the JC + FD series where so expensive to produce.

REMOTE CENTRAL LOCKING

The JC Cosmo was the first vehicle in the Mazda range to get remote central locking. A small IR-TX on the key ring transmitted to an IR-RX mounted near the interior light. No alarm system, just central locking. Although quite tame by todays security systems it was a first for a production Mazda & they had to start some where.

CAR CONTROL SYSTEM

With all the power of a 386-era PC a Mitsubishi electric touch screen was used across a mini-CRT monitor. Taking advantage of a CRT monitor was a Television tuner. Although not the 1st Japanese car to offer it. (that went to the Mega limo's from Toyota & Nissan) It was the 1st affordable car in Japan to have TV as an option. The CCS option also gave you finger tip control on the steering wheel (another 1st for a Mazda) allowing Stereo & climate control options to be altered without lifting your hand. In all, your screen could switch between 8-modes.......

TECHNICALITIES

Smart..... 1st Mazda with Serial data communications. It's taken for granted today but the ECU talked to the ECAT via serial comms. Called the PALMNET system is was a standard that would be used by many manufacturers into the 90's. Serial comms was a major step into the digital era for Mazda who where the first Japanese company to do so. In Laymans terms.... The Engine computer & Transmission computer talked to each other much like a modem talks to a PC. (less wiring & devices to send & receive the signal means less cost)

Quiet ..... Mazda rated the Cosmo interior sound level at just 63DB whilst cruising at 100km/h. Thats super quiet limo territory or about the sound levels in a household living room with no TV or radio playing. In fact it was still possible to whisper to your passenger & be heard at 160km/h such was its refinement.

Pricey..... Still to this day Mazda do not have anything in their range that comes close to the Cosmo price tag. Its equivilent to over AU$100,000 in 1990 money if Mazda sold it here.

Collectable..... After winning Le-Mans 24HR in 1991 Mazda offered a limited edition commemerative badge only to 20B-REW Cosmo buyers. The multi-rotor Cosmo & race car shared something in common.

POSSABILITIES

Mazda where keen on the Cosmo as shown in this planned convertible version. However, it never made it past the 1/5th scale model stage. By 1993 Mazda was bleeding red-ink across the globe & all models had to cut back on costs.

A Series-III version was planned for but by 1994 the new Ford Masters had gone through Mazda cutting all non profitable programs & the Cosmo was up the top alonside Cronos. Sadly the Series-III got to theme sketches only.
