Hey guys, i've been looking at this "2002 Bathurst R". I've tried to do some research but can only see Type R Bathurst, Type R Bathurst R.
Just curious as to which one it would be? Would it be special or?
Just confused that's all.

Hi

This is a common source of confusion, as Mazda was using "Bathurst" all over the place for RX-7 variants over the years. There are 3 completely different models:

Bathurst R (1995)
Type R Bathurst R (2001)
Type R Bathurst (2002)

In 1995, Mazda released a special edition Bathurst R in Japan - it is a series 6. Can't be bothered finding the specs - but it isn't anything special really.

In 2001, Mazda released a special edition Type R Bathurst R. It was the same as the mid spec Type R, which had 280ps engine but didn't get the big 314mm brakes. The special features on the Type R Bathurst R were:
- Showa height adjustable coilovers
- carbon fibre look interior (not real CF though - basically vinyl wrapped plastic)
- Bathurst R decals on the B pillar
- 3 colours only, including Sunburst Yellow which was only ever available on this edition. A lot of people like this colour, which is really what makes this car desirable.

For the 2002 model year, Mazda released a Type R Bathurst edition. Like the 2001 Bathurst R, it was based off the Type R, but with Showa adjustable coilovers and foglights as standard. Unlike the Type R Bathurst R, it didn't get special colours, interior upgrades or decals. It came in the normal white or innocent blue mica, so it's visually identical to a normal Type R. Additionally, during the Type R Bathurst run, there were no Type Rs or Type RBs anyway. So query whether it is really a limited edition - more like a runout edition. There were effectively only 2 models available at that point: Spirit R or Type R Bathurst - so it was basically the base model.

I have scans of the brochure too if anyone is interested.
