Hi guys I was under the impression that all series 3 diffs were LSD but mine isn't, how common are they?
I want to change my diff to LSD

This is a common misconception. Certain US models came with a LSD but not here.

All Australian delivered series 3s came with an open diff standard. LSD was an option, but only series 3 Sports models. Sports were bit of an oddity because they were actually a base model and a lot cheaper but it was the only model for which you could get LSD. It is also weird being the cheapest base model, but rare. 99% of series 3s are in fact the top spec Limited. The middle spec Deluxe are virtually unheard of. I've only seen one in my life.

From my (rare) Sports brochure....

Thanks.
My concern is the standard diff won't provide the traction, from the 13b turbo
What would you do, would you stick with the standard or get a diff centre from the USA.

coreyportelli - what will you be using the car for? Big clutch dumps will destroy a series 3 LSD or aftermarket centre, but if there's not too much of that you should get a good life span out of it. There's been a couple of threads recently on this.

KYPREO - that brochure is interesting. I wonder if my series 2 Sport would have originally had an LSD? Because it didn't when I got it :(

The car will be used mainly for Sunday driving.
Maybe I'll see how I go with the standard diff.

If it's a standard 12A, i used to run an open diff with 4.44 ring and pinion and it was great fun.

Series 3 diffs are pretty strong but the weakest link is the stock spider gear center. If you are going 13t you will want to chuck an LSD center in if not for the traction then for the longevity. Im not sure what the best bang for buck options are though. Modena does stuff but $$$$$ I think i read somewhere that mx5 centers go in? Not sure.

If you can find them, an earlier style mx-5 torsen will go into a series 3 rx-7. Both cars run the same diff centre. I have an mx-5 type-2 torsen going into my series 2 via a series 3 rear end conversion.

I have fitted MX5 Torsen into S3 diff housing. Straight swap.
